Jackie and Valerie Greene moved to the beautiful Texas hill country in 2007 to restart their lives after Jackie retired from 30 years in the West Texas oil fields. They still needed to work, but found jobs in short supply. Being musicians on the Cowboy poetry and music circuit, they had become acquainted with many of the vendors that followed these events. In July of 2009, they made a decision to become a vendor as well and therefore created a roasted nut business. Over the next three years, their company, Wimberley Valley Gourmet Specialties, grew to include gourmet foods and handcrafted culinary cooking oils.
With the addition of food items and bottling oil, they were required to secure a commercial kitchen where manufacturing could take place. A building was located in the quaint village of Wimberley, Texas which serves as the commercial kitchen and a store front. Valerie joined forces with her brother, Vince, and their mother, Glennis, and they together created a unique gift and gourmet boutique full of antiques, collectibles, jewelry, gourmet food, paintings and gift items.
Cackleberry Mercantile opened its doors in November of 2011 and is the home of Wimberley Valley Gourmet Specialties. The main feature of the store is the TASTING BAR. Each day they feature 6-8 different gourmet food and drink items for you to taste and experience. Visitors can sample the delicious roasted nuts and gourmet offerings, shop for kitchen gifts and collectibles, and view the work of world renowned bird artist F.P. Bennett, Jr.
